Tevin Campbell was born on the 12th of November, 1976 in Waxahachie, Texas. He was born to a former postal worker, Rhonda Byrd. His mother later became his manager. Not much is known about his father. However, it is known that his father left the family after his brother was born. He has two siblings, a sister, Marche, and a brother, Damario.

At an early age, he started singing gospel music. He started singing to a Jazz singer, Bobbi Humphrey when he was 12. Tevin was signed by the manager, Benny Medina after the videotape he performed with Humphrey reached out to him. Then, he and his family members relocated to Encino, Los Angeles.

Tevin studied at a private school in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood. There, he got to work with record producer, Quincy Jones on his song, Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me). In June 1990, the song reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart. Campbell gave his first solo hit song, Round and Round, which peaked at No. 3 on the R&B chart.

In February 1999, he released his self-titled fourth album. He collaborated with many singers on the album such as Faith Evans, Wyclef Jean, SWV, and David Foster. He kept a low public profile from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, he appeared on Broadway for the musical, Hairspray. In September 2015, he was featured on a remake of the single, Maybe Tomorrow. Later, he dropped a new song titled “Safer on the Ground” from his fifth album.

Campbell shared a surprising video post on social media in March 2019 which revealed that he would be appearing on the fourth season of the OWN scripted drama series, Queen Sugar. He thanked the director, Ava DuVernay in the video for keeping her word and also shared gratitude to other cast and crew members for making him feel at home.

In the past, there was a rumor that the musician, Quincy Jones has sexually assaulted him as a minor. However, he completely denied the rumors.

In March 2022, he opened up about his sexuality on Twitter, which he later deleted. Later on, he implied being a part of the LGBTQ Community by adding a bald eagle emoji and Scorpio symbol on his Twitter profile.
