Norman Milton Lear was born in July of 1922 in New Haven, Connecticut to parents Hyman and Jeanette (née Seicol). Notably, his father’s family hails from Russia, while his mother’s heritage stems from Ukraine.

Moreover, Lear had a younger sister named Claire Lear Brown who passed away back in 2015.

As far as education goes, Lear graduated from Weaver High School in 1940 before enrolling at Emerson College in Boston. However, he dropped out in 1942 to join the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Commendably, Lear flew 52 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. Afterward, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in public relations.

Lear’s career in the television industry really took off in the 1970s after networks picked up his shows All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Maude, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time, and Good Times.

Eventually, he and talent agent Jerry Perenchio founded T.A.T. Communications. Then, the pair sold their company to Columbia Pictures in 1985 for $485 million in shares of The Coca-Cola Company, which they split evenly down the middle.

Since then, Lear has produced shows like Diff’rent Strokes, Archie Bunker’s Place, Sanford, What’s Happening!!, and Carter County, amongst a few others.

In 2014, the famed producer published his own memoir entitled Even This I Get To Experience.

Lastly, Lear has won five Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards in addition to receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2019, he received the Britannia Award for Excellence in Television.

Originally, Lear was married to Frances Loeb, who served as the publisher of his magazine from from 1956 to 1985. Wildly, Loeb received $112 million from Lear in the divorce settlement. Then, Lear married a woman named Charlotte Rosen from 1943 to 1947.

Lear is currently married to his wife Lyn Davis, who is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, celebrated environmentalist, and political activist.
