Mahmoud Abdul Rauf is a former professional basketball player from Mississippi. The Denver Nuggets drafted him in the 1990 NBA draft. Rauf received the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 1993 and was one of the 1993 NBA All-Star Weekend’s most accurate free throw shooters.

Abdul Rauf was born in March 1969 in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was raised by his mother, Jacqueline Jackson along with his two brothers. Mohamaud went through tough days in his childhood due to poor financial conditions.

Rauf attended special education classes after he missed the fourth grade. He suffered a moderate form of Tourette syndrome until he was 17. Rauf later attended Gulfport High School. He scored an average of 29.9 points in his senior season in high school. Rauf was also named Mississippi Mr. Basketball for two years in 1987 and 1988.

Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was discovered during lunch period by a middle school girls’ coach. He didn’t know the basketball rules. Despite that, he scored 24 points in his first game. He was in great form while in his freshman year at Louisiana State University.

Rauf scored 48 points in his third game for the school against Louisiana Tech. He also set the scoring record for a freshman with 53 points against Florida. Rauf declared for the NBA draft after his remarkable two-year stint at LSU. Then, the Tigers retired his #35 jersey in 2020.

Mahmoud’s professional career began after the Denver Nuggets chose him in the 1990 NBA draft. He got into the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in his first season in the NBA. Later, he competed in the 1993 NBA Slam Dunk Contest after his dunking ability was sent to NBA league officials through a tape.

Rauf was a key player on Denver’s team and played with the team until 1996. He scored his career-high 20 assists against the Phoenix Suns in November 1995. In 1998, he signed a two-year contract with Fenerbahce of the Turkish Basketball League. Then, he signed with Russian Basketball Super League’s Ural Great in December 2003.

Rauf signed with Italian Serie A club, Sedima Roset in  2004. In the 2004-05 season, he scored an average of 18.4 points and 2.2 assists in each game. After that, he was signed by Udine in July 2005. However, he missed the entire season because of his torn Achilles tendon.

Rauf later came out of retirement in his career for the third time to play Aris Thessaloniki in the 2006-07 season. Then, he was signed by Saudi Basketball League’s Al-Ittihad in November 2007. After nearly two years, he signed with Japan’s Basketball League team, Kyoto Hannaryz. While playing the first season in Japan, he scored an average of 17.9 points in 38 games.

Mahmoud was later re-signed with Kyoto Hannayryz in July 2010 for the 2010-11 season. As of now, he is playing for the Three-Headed Monsters in the BIG3 basketball league. Rauf came into the limelight after his documentary titled Stand premiered on February 3 on Showtime. The Showtime documentary, Stand explores Rauf’s story of overcoming poverty, Tourette’s Syndrome, racism, and a single-parent household.

Rauf is currently married to his second wife, April who is a Muslim convert. The pair studied at the same high school and had known each other since their high school days. As of now, they are married for over two decades. Rauf has five kids from his first marriage.
