Don Lemon was born in March of 1966 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to parents Wilmon Lee Richardson and Katherine Marie (Bouligney). His father was a respected attorney who was a key figure in successfully challenging the segregation of public transportation in the area.

In 2017, Lemon announced that he had been dating real estate agent Tim Malone. The couple got engaged two years later and they remain that currently.
